Maiko Haaaan!!!

Maiko Haaaan!!! (舞妓Haaaan!!!)

Maiko Haaaan!!! is a film I can't give enough praise to. It's a very wild, wacky, but sometimes very emotional film.

It follows the exploits of Kimihiko Onizuka (played by Sadao Abe), who is obsessed with Maiko. Maiko are Geisha apprentices. He is soon transfered to Kyoto Japan, apparently ground zero for Geisha houses. He dumps his girl friend and attempts to achieve his dream by actually going to a Geisha house. The movie also shows his girlfriend, Fujiko Osawa (played by the beautiful Kou Shibasaki) and her journey in becoming a Maiko. Kimihiko also develops a wild feud with his rival in the Geisha house Kiichiro Naito (played by Shinichi Tsutsumi).

The movie is very slap-stick and has some wild events happen. Kimihiko starts out as an office worker, but soon goes on to bigger things in his constant one-up-man ship of Kiichiro.

This movie is very, very Japanese - and takes some getting use to, as some of the foreign concepts are hard to grasp the first time around.

This movie is definitely worth checking out. You can find it here at amazon.com. The DVD has a great documentary on the film, with interviews and much more. Also - the film it self is not short, so you get your money's worth.

This film is hilarious - with Sadao Abe being like the Japanese version of Jim Carrey.

If you have any interest in Japanese movie - this is a good film to start with. It's not everyone - but you might want to try renting it.

Here I have a trailer for the film. It has subtitles, but the quality of the movie isn't as great as I'd like it to be. Still it should give you a good sense of what the film is like.
